COLD WEATHER SAFETY TIPS

We've already had a small taste of frigid temperatures this season, and even colder weather is on the way this weekend. We wanted to share some important cold weather safety information with you.
*Look Out for Vulnerable Individuals
-Check on older adults, young children, and people with chronic medical conditions.
-These groups are more susceptible to cold-related illnesses.
*Outdoor Safety
-Limit time outdoors in extreme cold weather.
-Take frequent warm-up breaks if working outside.
-Use hand and foot warmers when necessary.
-Walk carefully on ice-take short steps and keep your feet flat.
*Dress Properly
-Wear layers: A moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating middle layer (fleece or wool), and a waterproof/windproof outer shell.
-Cover extremities: Hats, gloves/mittens, warm socks, and insulated boots.
-Avoid cotton: It retains moisture and increases heat loss.
-Protect your face: Use a scarf or mask to warm the air before you breathe it in.
-Wet clothing dramatically increases heat loss.
-Change out of damp socks, gloves, and layers as soon as possible.
*Prevent Hypothermia & Frostbite
-Know hypothermia signs: Shivering, confusion, slurred speech, clumsiness.
-Know frostbite signs: Numbness, pale or waxy skin, hard or frozen-feeling skin.
-Act quickly: Seek warmth immediately if symptoms appear.
-Warm gradually: Avoid direct heat sources like heating pads or hot water.
*Eat & Stay Hydrated
-Eat regular meals for energy and warmth.
-Drink plenty of fluids-cold air can dehydrate you quickly.
-Avoid excessive alcohol; it accelerates heat loss and impairs judgment.
*Home Safety
-Check heating systems regularly. Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable.
-Never use ovens or grills to heat your home.
-Install and test carbon monoxide detectors.
-Insulate pipes to prevent freezing and bursting.
*Winter Travel Safety
-Keep a winter emergency kit: Blankets, water, snacks, shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, first-aid kit, jumper cables.
-Drive slowly and allow extra stopping distance.
-Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line from freezing.
Share your route and expected arrival time if traveling in severe conditions.
